NOW No Chemicals, No Power, No Magnets!! |
| |
|
| |
1. What makes the MERUS® unit a unique technology? |
| |
|
| |
|
| |
The MERUS® technology operates on an entirely new principle that does not change the chemistry of water. The unit does not even come in contact with the fluid or water. It thus cannot be compared with conventional physical or other forms of water treatment. |
| |
|
|
| |
| |
1.0 Conventional Physical water treatment units. |
| |
|
| |
The term “physical water treatment unit” implies a unit which acts on the calcium carbonate contained in the water with the aid of permanent magnets, electromagnets, electrical fields or electrical pulses etc. If an electromagnetic force is well-matched to the quantity of water flowing through the pipe and if this field can be kept constant through the constant flow of water and throughout the pipe, then there can be some useful results with such units in limited non heat applications.
The effect however is difficult to create and maintain through out the pipe line
(multiple units are required). Even then result achieved disappears depending on the time elapsed and heat. The calcium carbonate reverts to its initial structure once the “field is not present”. In many pipe systems, there is no constant flow of water and some dwells in the pipe system for an extended period. In such cases, a conventional physical water treatment unit offers relatively unsatisfactory results. |
| |
|
|
| |
| |
1.1 The MERUS_ water treatment unit |
| |
|
| |
The MERUS® units operate on the basis of an entirely different principle. Though there are no magnets, no power source, and no chemicals, the
MERUS® unit emits oscillations into the water, referred to as
natural oscillations, molecular oscillations or bio-signals. These oscillations
are continually transferred from the MERUS® units to the water and the water stores
these oscillations. The oscillations are propagated primarily in the direction of the flow of the water/liquid; and as a result ALL THE WATER is induced to act against scale and corrosion. These oscillations are emitted by the ring and maintained in the water over long period of time and are ONLY lost when the ring or the water is exposed to or superimposed by electrical fields.
This means that the ENTIRE WATER BODY retains its properties even when it is tapped/stationary or flowing and retains its de-scaling or anti-rust properties. |
| |
|
|
| |
| |
1.2 What exactly are oscillations? |
| |
|
| |
All bodies and all materials have their own molecular and fundamental oscillation, also known as Brownian colloidal movement. All bodies consist of molecules, which in turn consist of several atoms. These atoms are not rigidly linked to each other, and are in constant motion. This motion creates the molecular oscillation that result in the inherent characteristics of water.
The MERUS® unit functions when there is water and emits “an interfering oscillation” or a resonance oscillation in response to the fundamental oscillations of the liquid media flowing in the pipe. (The interference oscillations charged within the MERUS unit are dependant on the MEDIA and solids flowing in the liquid medium!) The standard unit is charged to handle the most common problems of scaling, rust and bio-fouling within water flow, but require to be customized depending on data of the fluid incase it is not predominantly water. The interference oscillation creates a shift in the natural oscillation of solids such as calcium and Iron which otherwise readily form Calcium Carbonate and Iron Oxide (Rust). THE NEW oscillation that is formed with this interference insures that the SOLIDS and IMPURITIES stay in FLOW and do not deposit.
The MERUS Unit thus makes an ALLY of water and instead of trying to change its properties chemically, it insures that the solids in flow, stay as is and do not deposit as scale or create corrosion!!
|
| |
|
|
| |
| |
1.3 How do these oscillations occur and reach the water? |
| |
|
| |
Since there is NO ENERGY source required for operating a MERUS® unit; there is the frequent question as to how the oscillations are transmitted ?
We know that there is a constant exchange of signals between the atomic nucleus and the electrons. The frequencies of these exchanged signals lie in the gigahertz to terahertz band. The MERUS® units are charged by the principals M/S MERUS Gmbh with various passive programs and various machines so as to RETAIN and STORE the charge within this frequency band. These are available for various media (including crude oil and fossil fuels), contaminants and solids that flow in water. SPECIFIC media require a SPECIFIC charge and THAT IS WHY a MERUS® unit is fitted only after our engineers have taken full data on flow rate, solids, and water analysis. The MERUS® unit is made of mainly aluminum and silicium alloy: and these materials are particularly well-suited for accepting charge, retaining, maintaining and emitting them over long periods (in years depending on the environment and media). These charges are lost ONLY when electrical energy is superimposed externally, primarily in the form of strong electrosmog.
A MERUS® unit emits oscillations into the water regardless of the pipe material on which it is installed.
Here are a few LAY MAN and non technical examples of oscillations and transmission of this charge without contact. These are well understood by the acoustic industry!
There is the so-called Doppler effect in which a noise source moving towards a person or point generates a higher-pitched tone than when the body moves away from that point or person.
There are many positive tests and installations that are being conducted in the car and appliance industry to minimize engine/operating noise based on “noise canceling or what can be referred to as an interfering oscillations.
The government of the former German Democratic Republic at times had successfully used so-called acoustic guns to “silence” rock concerts held in West Berlin and make them relatively inaudible to those in the East.
In construction a builders greatest fear when constructing a bridge is when and if it starts to rock and sway increasingly if a sympathetic vibration is superimposed on it. In Prussian times, soldiers were NOT ALLOWED to march in STEP over a bridge for fear that this could involve a risk and could cause the bridge to collapse. And finally
We are of all familiar with visuals of singers shattering glasses with their high-pitched voices!!

2. Environment and Applications |
|
| |
| |
2.1 Corrosion |
| |
|
| |
Water has many characteristics and properties BUT in an unsaturated state it is perhaps the most aggressive fluid in existence that attacks metals. This leads to corrosion. Even stainless steel of optimum quality is not immune to such corrosion.
Merus stops and reverses the simple forms of corrosion, i.e. corrosion owing to stagnant water and unsaturated water (water with a low mineral content).
In the case of corrosion owing to galvanic action, creeping corrosion, chemicals, acid corrosion and caustic lye etc. a MERUS installation is generally able “to arrest the rate of corrosion” However in many applications we have experienced that corrosion has been completely stopped.
The other critical form of corrosion is bio-fouling or bio-film.
Metal pipes are virtually all subject to some form of corrosion. The extent of the corrosion depends, amongst other things, on the saturation of the water (free oxygen O2). Unsaturated water is produced if water is sourced or mixed from different sources. Corrosion leads to a roughening of the surfaces in the pipe, and flowing water within carries rust, and erodes the pipe walls making them thinner and thinner. This is seen specifically at the points where the flow rate is the highest. At elbows or flanges, making them more prone to erosion and leaks. Additionally the rough surface cause scale to be deposited easily within the pipe leading to a faster rate of clogging up, and loss in energy.
What about existing scale and rust?
The oscillations of the MERUS® units also influence the existing iron ions to get detached from the existing rust; and over the course of time they are flushed out. When the existing corrosion has been removed, the inside of the pipe finally becomes black time. This black coat is a saturated form of iron oxide, and acts as a coating (magnetite, Fe3O4) which then prevents the rust from reforming.

| |
|
|
| |
| |
2.2 Calcium carbonate |
| |
|
| |
Calcium carbonate is found in virtually all sources of water. Calcium carbonate however becomes a problem ONLY when it is precipitated and deposits on the surface. This occurs when:
• "Normal water" starts to lose its ability to bind calcium carbonate above temperatures of 30°C. The ability to bind calcium carbonate keeps falling as the temperature increases. The rate of precipitation of calcium carbonate thus increases as temperature increases.
• The OTHER is when water evaporates. Minerals dissolved in the water, such as the calcium carbonate, are unable to evaporate and are left behind.
These two phenomena lead to scale being deposited in machines and pipes and more so if they operate at high temperatures. Industry thus accepts as a norm that the pipes of heat exchangers frequently clog up, and water pressure will drop, as scale forms; thereby increasing energy needs. Finally this forces replacement of pipe when water flow is impeded. Water is therefore almost always chemically pre-treated for MOST critical applications in process industry.
Besides the high recurring cost for chemical dosing, loss in productivity, it is the ever increasing cost of energy to maintain pressure that hurts!! Add to this the downtime costs for cleaning and chemicals (most of which cause corrosion) and finally the unscheduled breakdowns of the machinery. Scaling/corrosion are now one of the PRINCIPAL creators of high maintenance and energy costs in process industry.
MERUS represents a very good-value-for-money alternative to the above procedures.
MERUS charged oscillations emitted into the water by the MERUS® units insure that calcium carbonate remains in flow and is therefore precipitated only at MUCH higher temperatures (above 350 degrees)
If there is sufficient flow in the pipe, then even old scale is entrained and flushed away by the water based on the MERUS effect. If the flow rate is low or too low, then scale gradually becomes soft, with a grimy consistency and IT MAY be left behind if there is no flow pressure. IN this case it can be easily removed with mechanical cleaning without the use of chemicals.
MERUS has varied and extensive experience on several heat exchangers worldwide, with some capacities exceeding 1,000 m3/h. In most cases, Merus has made it possible to drastically reduce and even eliminate the usage of de-scaling chemicals in many installations. Merus also finds successful application in steam generators, and specially those that cannot be operated with normal boiler feed water owing to the technical conditions (e.g. on board ships).
LIMITATIONS experienced in some Industrial applications:
There are however some limitations experienced in applications where Merus may not be suitable. These are applications where water is sprayed as in open systems and large quantities of water evaporate. Scale and other minerals are left behind when water evaporates. This leads to the familiar incrustations. These applications where a constant water stream of water does not flow over these surfaces are not suitable for MERUS application.

|
|
| |
| |
2.3 Biofilm, Bacterial fouling |
| |
|
| |
In many systems, deposits attributable to microorganisms are formed. Though the origin of these deposits can be suspect and debated and it can be assumed that they have intruded from the outside. Once these microorganisms are in the system, they propagate and frequently spread throughout the entire system and form a film on the pipe walls. This film is aggressive and attacks the pipe walls as it is corrosive. Then the bacteria emit and support spores in the bio-film, which with other deposits, become extremely difficult to remove. |
|
| |
| |
3 How do you test and evaluate the MERUS system? |
|
| |
| |
3.1 Measurement methods |
| |
|
| |
IT needs to be emphasized again that Merus does not change the chemistry of the water. As the effect is at the molecular level it becomes difficult to measure the effectiveness of the MERUS unit by simple conventional analysis (hardness testing). However, in some cases, a reduction in conductivity by up to 30 % can be measured, depending on the original composition of the water. The surface tension of the water may also be reduced in individual cases by up to 50 %. BUT these are complex methods.
Consequently to form some measurement criteria, recourse has to be taken of indirect measurement methods. Depending on application, this requires application-specific methods which our engineers will discuss with you. Here are two examples:
A) To measure Anti Corrosion results:
One of the most frequent applications is corrosion in pipes or within cooling tubes within machines. In this case, the share of iron in the water can be measured. If historical data on this is available, THEN it is possible to record POST MERUS installation, which will show FIRST an increase in the iron within the water first (when old rust is being removed), and then the drop in TDS over time. Finally it drops well below the initial value as the formation is arrested. Water samples will need to be taken from the pipe system at one or more points. Using the “blow-down” point in the pipeline as the obvious inspection location for steam generators.
B) To measure performance on Heat exchangers
This is the most frequent application and best suited for MERUS as heat increases scaling. We assume that observation of differential pressure through the heat exchanger is easily done and already being monitored by the potential customer currently. POST MERUS installation it can be measured to note that the differential pressure no longer rises or that it drops to establish a NEW NORM and better value for the heat exchanger.
Another simple method can be to monitor the efficiency of the heat exchanger by comparing the quantity of cooling/heating medium with the effect achieved. It can be measured to note that the efficiency of a used heat exchanger slowly increases again over few weeks after the installation.
However, all these methods are indirect methods which provide only indications. The CLEAREST and IDEAL measure of result must be based on visual inspections, i.e. fitting test specimens in pipes or opening heat exchangers, boilers or steam generators. In such cases, it is generally possible to determine a clear difference. ONCE the MERUS unit has worked for few weeks, it will be seen to have removed some scale, leaving behind little scale, rust or incrustations that would appear and finally the protective coating will have formed.
|
|
| |
| |
3.2 De-scaling and/or De-rusting with informed water |
| |
|
| |
The MERUSANOTHER simple test to see the characteristics of MERUS treated water for De-scaling or De-rusting is with informed/treated water. This involves adding MERUS treated water to a bucket or jar. Test specimens of old rusted, scaled pipes can be placed in this water and observed.
These pipe sections are placed into the bucket for some time and it is possible to easily observe what happens. Depending on composition of rust and scale, the first results will be able to be seen even after only a few days. The scale and rust are detached and fall off. In the case of rusty iron pipes, the black coloration can also be seen in this way after a certain period. Virtually any scaled or rusty device can be treated in this way.
If the scale was very heavy and it is not detached completely, then it will be seen to become soft and grimy and easily removable. Even clearer results can be seen if the jar or the bucket is positioned on a Merus unit during the entire test period.
SINCE MERUS is a unique technology WE offer a FIRST installation to selected customers AT OUR RISK, We assume that there are tangible parameters and milestones that are already being recorded by the customer SO THAT there is a way to measure BEFORE and AFTER results. The conditional installation is dependant on your ability to provide us your CURRENT DATA and NORMS. There must also be some place for physical inspection of the application by our engineer to show before and after results. The fitment is therefore at our discretion!
We seek full data regarding the flow rate, current TDS, pressure problems, frequency of cleaning, repair and the ability to EVALUATE based on some measurement the BENEFIT within 60 to 90 days of FITMENT!! Our engineers will advise on correct positioning of the units.
|
| |
|
|
| |
| |
3.3: Operating conditions and caution |
| |
|
| |
MERUS can be used on any pipe material, even in the case of mixed plumbing installations. The installation location MUST HOWEVER be free of electrosmog since a constant influence of an electrical field (>=50 V/m) will discharge the unit and make it ineffective. In addition, preference should be given to a dry room installation since condensation may lead to surface corrosion on the units, thus impairing the charge. We normally cover a NEW installation with anti corrosive tape.
Each MERUS unit is capable of informing a certain quantity of water per hour/day and different models are offered as per rate of flow of water, diameter of pipe and whether any BIO contamination is also present. A MERUS BIO ring has a different oscillation charge in the product. There are standard MERUS units intended forcivil areas for domestic drinking water consumption where flow rates are low. Industrial MERUS units are able to handle much higher rates of flow and different diameters. In certain cases, it is necessary to install several units in series to handle main flow line and protect individual critical equipment.
The costs vary as per needs and can be offered only after inspection. Fundamentally there is a rise in price as per increase in diameter and rate of flow and finally if Bio capability is required.
IMPORTANT:
The MERUS units should not be installed in the direct vicinity (< 150 cm) of electrical cables or electrical loads since this would impair the effectiveness of the units and negate the action.
Using Merus in process water which then becomes a part of YOUR finished product, must be tested before final fitment. It is recommended that a TEST is conducted in order to establish whether the Merus oscillations influence the quality and taste. Customers in the food processing industry have detected slight change in taste of the product. This is a fair probability especially in the case where there us a fermentation process. It may be emphasized again that there is no contact between a MERUS Unit and water and hence there is no chemical change or addition being made. We however believe that MERUS treated water must have positive effects which of course must be tested and evaluated for every application where it is used and becomes a part of the final product
